Andy Moran has resigned as manager of Leitrim Football Club after three years in charge.

Leitrim GAA made the announcement this evening, just days after Moran expressed his interest in staying with the team.

Moran suggested in media interviews last week that it would take another three years to build on what has already been done.

However, the board issued a statement saying Moran had informed them of his decision to resign.

“(Andy) has put boundless energy and enthusiasm into improving the standards of the Leitrim senior football team and this year has also taken on the role of manager of the Under-20 team,” the statement read.

“He took an extremely professional approach to his job and in each of his three Allianz League campaigns gave the team a chance of promotion from Division 4 on the final match day of each campaign, culminating this year in a promotion to play in the Allianz League Final at Croke Park in March. It was only the sixth time that the Leitrim Senior Football Team had graced Croke Park.

“He also saw a significant improvement in championship results this year, with the team playing in five championship games for the first time since 1994.”

Moran’s assistant this year has been former Cavan manager Mickey Graham, who is now one of the main candidates to replace the Mayo man.
