Police searching for suspect near 21st and Emerson after shot fired at officer

INDIANAPOLIS — Police are warning residents to stay home and avoid a neighborhood on the city’s east side where a man suspected of shooting at police was barricaded in a home after being released earlier.

“This area is not safe,” the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.


A search has begun for a suspected gunman accused of shooting at police. IMPD said no officers were injured, but the suspect was at large for some time and police were combing the area for the gunman.

“Residents are asked to stay indoors and avoid the area,” IMPD said. “Call 911 immediately if you see anything.”

According to police, officers were in the area of ​​21st and Emerson shortly before 3:30 p.m. Officers spotted a suspect officers were looking for. The suspect is accused of fleeing on foot and firing at least one shot at officers.

IMPD police said no officers were hit by gunfire and they did not return fire.

The original police account lists the incident as occurring in the 5100 block of E. 20th Place. A SWAT team was called to the neighborhood to assist in the search.

Shortly before 6 p.m., police said the suspect was found barricaded inside a residence. That didn’t last much longer, as IMPD said the search for the suspect had narrowed to Hawthorne Lane.
