Mushroom-infused candy and chocolate withdrawn from sale in New York and the US after reports of serious illnesses

California-based Prophet Premium Blends is recalling all flavors of its Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars, wafers and gummies following reports of serious illnesses associated with consumption of the products.

The products, which can be purchased online and in-person at various retail locations across the country, and the illnesses they allegedly cause, are being investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), poison control centers across the country, and local and state partners.

All batches, expiration dates, and product flavors have been discontinued, and Prophet Premium Blends has discontinued production and distribution of this product line.

The products contain varying amounts of “nootropic and functional” mushrooms, according to the Diamond Shruumz website. The products do not contain psilocybin or controlled drugs, the website says.

The full list of retailers is currently unknown. However, a total of 39 cases have been reported, as well as 23 hospitalizations in 20 states, including New York.

Here’s what you need to know.

Symptoms to look out for

People who have become ill after eating the products have reported a range of serious symptoms, the CDC said. These symptoms include:

What could cause these diseases?

The company says the recalled products contain higher than normal amounts of muscimol, a psychoactive chemical found in some mushrooms that could potentially be causing the symptoms people are experiencing.

Samples are collected, tested and analyzed by FDA, CDC and state partners.
