6-year-old boy dies after drinking cup of popular energy drink

A six-year-old boy has died after consuming a glass of Monster Energy drink.

The tragic incident took place while the young man was visiting his grandmother in Matamoros, in northeastern Mexico, on April 16.

According to reports, young Francisco Cervantes saw a glass filled with Monster Energy – an energy drink – on the table and swallowed it to quench his thirst.

He immediately began to feel unwell and was taken by his relatives to the local Alfredo Pumarejo hospital.

After admission, he was diagnosed with poisoning and later brain death.

He spent six days in hospital in a coma because his mother, Jessica, initially refused to take him off life support.

“I thank everyone who came to support us,” the grieving mother said later.

“Unfortunately, my son could not take it anymore. We will now see what the funeral costs are to give him a Christian burial.”

Various health professionals and services, including the UK NHS, recommend that young children do not consume energy drinks, which are often high in caffeine and sugar.

It was not clear whether young Francisco suffered from any known pre-existing health conditions.

Yahoo News Australia has contacted Monster about the boy’s death.

As reported in a 2019 study, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said 34 deaths had been attributed to energy drinks, warranting an investigation into their safety.

The study, titled “Impact of high-volume energy drink consumption on electrocardiographic and blood pressure parameters: a randomized trial,” reported that “energy drink consumption was associated with cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, spontaneous coronary dissection, and coronary vasospasm.”
