Stuart Hogg spent the night in a cell and was given a warning before his arrest

Stuart Hogg: Stuart Hogg has been warned he will be jailed if he breaches his bail conditions again after admitting having sex with his divorced wife Gillian.

The former Scotland captain recently retired and joined French club Montpellier in the summer, signing a two-year contract with the option of a third career.

Hogg’s new contract with Montpellier is reported to be worth around £350,000 per season, according to reports earlier this week, after being paid around £580,000 per season at Exeter Chiefs.

The British and Lions star appeared at Jedburgh Sheriff Court after being arrested on Tuesday for repeatedly contacting Gillian. He spent the night in a cell where he admitted breaching bail and had his sentence delayed.

Hogg, 32, is due to stand trial later this month on charges of harassment in Glasgow and Hawick, as well as sending frightening and disturbing messages in Hawick and Devon.

He allegedly monitored his wife’s communications, tracked his whereabouts, controlled her family life for seven years and accused her of betrayal.

This week he is due to be a best man at his older brother Graham’s wedding and has been told that any further off-field incidents will likely result in him being refused bail and sent to prison.

Sheriff Kevin McCarron told Hogg, Scotland’s all-time leading try-scorer, that only a clean record would save him from a prison sentence.

“Only because you have no past will I be able to release you. I will place additional requirements on you to have no contact with Gillian Hogg. No contact means no contact.

“To be clear, if this happens again, it is highly unlikely you will regain your freedom,” the judge noted.

Hogg will soon begin pre-season at Montpellier.
