10-year-old boy injured after fireworks explode

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A 10-year-old boy from the Oklahoma City area is now back home after being treated for burns caused by a fireworks explosion.

The family asked that the boy not be identified, but his grandfather contacted Nexstar’s KFOR and sent photos to warn others of the danger.

KFOR spoke by phone with the boy’s grandfather. He said his grandson had purchased four “Barrett M107” fireworks. Of the four, two malfunctioned, one of which injured the boy, he said.

Eva Fair works closely with the sparklers at Fireworks Warehouse in Oklahoma City.

“Be careful,” she warned. “Sometimes something can go wrong and cause a big explosion.”

Fireworks Warehouse owner Kent Herzog recommends that only adults use fireworks.

“Yes, we want kids to enjoy fireworks, but we want adults to use them,” Herzog said.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated that fireworks caused 10,200 injuries in 2022 alone, and that figure only includes injuries that required emergency room visits. A total of 11 deaths were also attributed to fireworks that year, the CPSC said.
