Addabbo encourages students to participate in Senate summer reading program

By forum staff

State Sen. Joe Addabbo (D-Woodhaven) on Tuesday invited parents across the 15th District to track their children’s reading activities over the summer break.

By visiting nysenate.gov/nyread and entering the titles and details of three books your child read this summer, the participant will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Addabbo.

The theme of this year’s edition is: “The adventure begins in your library.”

According to Addabbo, summer reading is important for children for several reasons:

  • Preventing “Summer Slippage” – “Summer slippage” is a common term used when students forget some of the skills and knowledge they learned during the school year during the summer break. Reading during this time allows children to maintain or improve their reading skills.
  • Practice Leads to Improvement – Reading during the summer months helps children improve their reading and writing skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. It can also improve their writing skills and critical thinking.
  • Creating a Reading Spark – Summer reading can ignite a lifelong love of reading and learning. When children enjoy reading, they are more likely to read throughout their lives, which can have many benefits for their academic and personal development.
  • Becoming a well-rounded person – Reading allows children to explore new ideas, cultures, perspectives, and experiences. This broadens their views and strengthens their creativity, which leads to empathy and understanding of others.
  • Builds confidence and independence – Reading regularly during the summer can boost children’s confidence in their reading skills and promote independent learning. It challenges them to explore topics of interest on their own and become more independent learners.

“Reading during the summer helps keep children’s minds sharp and opens up new worlds of learning and adventure,” Addabbo added. “Every year, I am proud to participate in the Senate Summer Reading Program, which is a great way to encourage young people to read by allowing them to track their progress and then receive a certificate from me. I hope it gives them a sense of accomplishment, and I am always happy to see what books the children read.”
