The prosecutor investigating the death of a man detained by police earlier this year has said there is reason to believe excessive force was used in his death.

A 35-year-old man died on May 27 at the Pasila police station in Helsinki.

Based on evidence collected so far during the preliminary investigation, the prosecutor’s office said it suspects two police officers and eight guards of committing crimes including involuntary manslaughter and involuntary breach of official duties.

Prosecutors conduct a preliminary investigation when there is reason to believe that a police officer or a person employed by the police has committed a crime while carrying out their official duties.

The investigation will determine whether police and guards used excessive force during the incident.

Although reports of deaths in police custody in Finland are relatively rare, this was the first of two such incidents in the same week in late May. In the second case, a man in his 20s was found dead in his cell at the same facility.
