Fourth of July celebrations in Chesterfield Township ended with a house fire and a firefighter being treated for heat exhaustion, officials said.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. on July 4, firefighters responded to a call about a house fire in the 26000 block of Fairwood Drive, near 21 Mile Road and Interstate 94. Investigators discovered the homeowner had been setting off fireworks in the driveway when debris fell on a shed next to the garage, causing the fire.

“The fire started in the shed and then spread to the garage and the house,” said Brian Bassett, Chesterfield Township Public Safety Director. “We were on scene within two to three minutes. We were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but the house was significantly damaged.”

None of the homeowners were injured. A firefighter who was treated for heat exhaustion is expected to recover, Bassett said.

Firefighters from New Baltimore, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and Macomb and Lenox counties responded to the scene.
