Who is Rebecca Joynes?

Rebecca Joynes is a former secondary school teacher from Greater Manchester who was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with two of her teenage pupils.

The court heard that Joynes, 30, had sexual relationships with two boys, known as Boy A and Boy B.

These types of relationships included unprotected sex and sending inappropriate messages.

The incidents occurred while the boys were still students at the school where she taught.

She lured Boy A with gifts and then had sex with him twice at her flat in Salford.

Joynes became pregnant with then 16-year-old Boy B, despite initially telling him she could not have children.

When she got out on bail in November, I was really struggling and wondering how my abuser could walk free. I had a panic attack watching the news. I had never had a panic attack before.

When he found out that his wife was pregnant, the boy tried to end the relationship.

He told the court: “I would try to end it and say ‘you’re a f***ing weirdo, you’re just an idiot, find someone your own age’.”

Joynes said: “I was in love with him. I was pregnant with his child.”

Boy B testified in court how his teacher “coerced, controlled and sexually harassed” him.

The boy said: “It broke up my family. They had a hard time accepting the fact that they had taken me to a school that was supposed to be a safe environment.

“My parents broke down every day and every night.

“When I was released on bail in November, I was in real pain and wondered how my abuser could still be walking free.

“I had a panic attack while watching the news. I’ve never had a panic attack before.

“I had trouble understanding how she couldn’t take any responsibility.

“The term ‘victim’ has been used in reference to me and Boy A, but it’s more than that.

“It reaches further than us. All of our families have been deeply affected.”

Rebecca Joynes was convicted of six counts of having sex with a child, including two counts in a position of trust, on Thursday 4 July 2024 at Manchester Crown Court.

She was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

Sentencing him, Judge Kate Cornell said Joynes had shown “incredible nerve” and “astonishing arrogance”.

Jane Wilson, Senior District Attorney for CPS North West, said: “Rebecca Joynes was a trusted secondary school teacher.

“She abused her position to groom and exploit two boys in the worst possible way, with no thought for the lasting consequences this would have on them.

“Every parent sends their children to school with the expectation that they will be safe and cared for; Joynes’ actions have shaken that trust.

“I would like to thank the victims for supporting the prosecution.

“I hope they move forward knowing that Joynes has been held accountable for her actions.”
