Villarreal confirms signing of 25-year-old Senegalese footballer

Villarreal have confirmed the arrival of Senegalese player Pape Gueye on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille after four years at the club. He signs a further four-year contract with the Yellow Submarine.

Gueye, 25, was a reserve player for OM last season but has performed well on loan at Sevilla in the second half of the 2022-23 season, making 16 appearances. He has 22 international caps and scored one goal for Senegal.

A much more defensive midfielder who can get forward, Gueye is strong, accurate with the ball and prone to yellow cards. Marcelino Garcia Toral will be hoping to increase his team’s pressing ability and is likely to take up some of the minutes that Etienne Capoue and Francis Coquelin have enjoyed in recent seasons.

Taking him on a free is a good deal for the Yellow Submarine. They are currently in talks with Celta Vigo over Santi Comesana as well, meaning Gueye will be fighting for a starting place alongside Dani Parejo as things stand.
