The Verona Prosecutor’s Office has opened a file to investigate Chico Forti: an inmate at the Montorio prison reported that the former surf champion, who has been incarcerated in the same Verona prison for over a month, allegedly asked him to contact some ‘ndranghetista to silence Marco Travaglio, Selvaggia Lucarelli, and a third person. According to reports from Il Fatto and Corriere della Sera, in exchange, Forti promised him future assistance as soon as he regained his freedom. Chico Forti, the new investigation The Prosecutor’s Office only confirms the investigation: ‘We have already informed the institutions and heard all possible protagonists,’ says Prosecutor Raffaele Tito. ‘For us, it is not a trivial matter, but I will not add anything else.’ Alarmed by the revelation, the informant warned Travaglio last Monday. The Prosecutor’s Office then heard three witnesses, including a second inmate who witnessed Forti’s meeting with the person who was supposed to contact the ‘ndrangheta. Now that the long-awaited day of Chico Forti’s return to Italy has arrived, various possibilities for his future are opening up. The former surfer and TV producer from Trentino has already served 24 years in Florida prisons, but the life sentence would require him to remain in prison for the rest of his life. Obviously, the goal of returning to his home country was not only to be closer to his family. In Italy, Forti’s lawyers can seek parole or a pardon for him. File against unknown persons At the moment, the file is against unknown persons because the crime has not yet been identified. The Department of Penitentiary Administration, the Prefecture of Verona, the Surveillance Court, and the Anti-Mafia Directorate of Turin have been informed of the matter. One of the hypotheses regarding the possible targeting of Travaglio and Lucarelli is the headline with which Travaglio’s newspaper opened the news about the former sailor turned entrepreneur in Florida on May 19, writing in the headline ‘Welcome, murderer.’ The National Guarantor for Detainees has initiated investigations regarding the news that in the Verona prison, Chico Forti, recently transferred to Italy from the United States, allegedly contacted ‘ndrangheta members to silence journalists Selvaggia Lucarelli and Marco Travaglio. ‘If these facts were confirmed, it would be very serious. For now, however, investigations have only been initiated within the limits of the Guarantor’s powers,’ sources from the Guarantor’s office report.
