Andy Moran steps down as Leitrim manager

Andy Moran has stepped down as senior manager of Leitrim Football Club after three years in charge.

A statement from Leitrim County Council on Thursday evening confirmed the news.

His departure will come as a surprise given that in recent weeks it had seemed the Mayo man was preparing for a fourth year as manager of the team.

Moran took over in 2021 and guided Leitrim to promotion to Division 3 of the Allianz Football League and to the league final at Croke Park earlier this season.

He also served as manager of the county U20 team and oversaw several impressive performances in this year’s Connacht U20 Championship.

In a statement on Thursday, Leitrim GAA Moran commented on his decision to step down:

“It is with a heavy heart that I am stepping down from this role but I feel it is the right thing to do at this time. With the team now promoted to Allianz League Division 3 in 2024, I feel Leitrim Senior Footballers are entering a new phase of their development. I feel we need someone who will fully commit for the next three years. My three years at Leitrim have been an absolute joy.

I would like to thank our sponsors during my years of management. Seamus and Caitriona Clarke of JP Clarke’s New York and most recently Pat Gallagher of the Gallagher Group. Small counties would struggle to compete at any level without the support of sponsors. Our donors and supporters who have generously supported our plans and ensured that they support the County Council and help with what the team needs.

Sincere thanks to Leitrim GAA Chairman Enda Stenson, Secretary Declan Bohan and PRO Barbara Loughlin Byrne. I would like to give special thanks to Treasurer Martin McCartin and Brian Blake, County Administrator, for their guidance and support over three seasons. The work would not have been possible without their support.

I would like to thank my management team and all the backroom staff who have been involved over the last three seasons. Mickey Graham, Luke Bree and in previous years Mike Solan and James Glancy. I would like to give a special thanks to Barry McWeeney who is Leitrim through and through and is the glue that has held it all together.

Finally, to the players. Every player who has played under our guidance has given their all for the cause. Under the leadership of Donal Wrynn and Mark Diffley, the people of Leitrim are fortunate to have an amazing group of ambassadors who represent the county. There are so many obstacles to Leitrim football, such as population, location and many other factors. Yet they continue to produce talented young footballers. I hope they continue to go from strength to strength. The future is bright. To all involved in Leitrim football – Thank you.”

Leitrim GAA officials described the partnership with Moran as “amazing”.

There is no information yet on whether Moran will be eligible to take up another management position.

Leitrim says it will consider appointing a new senior manager in due course.

The county board plans to hold its monthly meeting next Monday evening.
