Jewish Home Launches Elder Abuse Prevention Initiative in Partnership with Lifespan

Jewish Home has received funding from The Sephardic Foundation on Aging to create and support a new initiative – in partnership with Lifespan – to address elder abuse in the Rochester community.

The grant will enable the Jewish Home to provide training to 1,000 staff members, which will increase the capacity to provide holistic care to residents and patients and support the development of the Jewish Home’s person-centred care model.

Lifespan’s training, resources, and expertise will be used to enhance and expand Jewish Home’s ability to identify, assess, and care for the older adults they serve who may be victims of abuse.

“Elder abuse is a serious problem in our region – and across the country – that too often goes unreported and unrecognized,” said Michael King, president and CEO of Jewish Home. “This initiative will allow us to better support our community by increasing Jewish Home’s ability to address elder abuse among those we are privileged to serve.”

About one in ten older Americans has experienced some form of elder abuse, and most cases go unreported. Most perpetrators are family members of victims, and two-thirds are adult children or spouses.

“It is critical for our Rochester community to come together and address the devastating issue of elder abuse,” said Ann Marie Cook, president and CEO of Lifespan. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Jewish Home and this new opportunity to help them educate and train their workforce.”
