Maharashtra Governor: Maha Governor suspends NU VC again to set up probe panel | Nagpur News

NAGPUR: Governor of Maharashtra and state universities chancellor Ramesh Bais on Thursday suspended Nagpur University (NU) Vice Chancellor Subhash Chaudhari for the second time on similar allegations. suspension has been confirmed by senior sources in the governor’s office and NU, who say it is an unprecedented move in the state.
Chaudhari was first suspended on February 21 based on a commission of inquiry report submitted by state deputy secretary for higher and technical education Ajit Bawiskar.
The suspension on Thursday followed the release of a report by a committee appointed by the chancellor and headed by the department’s current deputy secretary, Ashok Mande.
Sources in the Chancellor’s office and NU revealed that the suspension order mentioned that the Chancellor was launching an investigation into the latest allegations outlined in the Mande report. The investigation would be led by a retired judge in accordance with the “Uniform Statute 2023” introduced in August last year.
The earlier Bawiskar panel report had accused Chaudhari of allegedly awarding contracts for examination papers at Pune-based MKCL University without due tender process and contracts for civil works. However, the Supreme Court had set aside his stay order on March 14, citing procedural lapses under the ‘Uniform Statute 2023’. The HC observed that the procedure prescribed under the Act was not followed before issuing the stay order.
Upon returning to office, Chaudhari was faced with another inquiry initiated by the Chancellor under Mande. Based on his report, Bais issued a show cause notice to Chaudhari on May 8, requesting his presence to explain the allegations against him.
Chaudhari called the notice mala fide and against the law. He challenged it in the high court, saying all the allegations against him were old and had been considered by the HC in its March ruling.
