Man arrested for allegedly shooting at vehicle from home, wounding minor

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a juvenile in a vehicle while he was at his home in early July.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office says a man was arrested on July 4 for allegedly shooting a juvenile in a vehicle while he was at his home.

According to the sheriff, at 4:36 a.m. Thursday, officers received a call from a woman in the 1200 block of Staunton Street in Selma who said four men were in a car in front of her home. An officer with the Clifton Forge Police Department arrived on scene and found shots allegedly fired from the home at a white Nissan Altima as it fled the scene.


The 37-year-old homeowner, William Chistoffer Sorrels, was detained by the officer until Alleghany County police officers arrived and took control of the scene.

During the investigation, officers learned that three juveniles and an 18-year-old male were allegedly on or near the property. Sorrels allegedly exited the residence and displayed a firearm. The individuals then fled.

The Sorrels allegedly opened fire on them, hitting the vehicle several times and hitting one of the minors in the right leg.

An AR.223 pistol was allegedly found and confiscated in the home, officers said.

The sheriff’s office was later notified that the injured juvenile and three other individuals were at the Lewis Gale Alleghany Emergency Department. The juvenile was later transported to Roanoke Carilion Hospital medevac for further treatment. They are currently in stable condition.

Sorrels was charged with the following:

  • Malicious wounding
  • Use of a firearm to commit a crime
  • Shoot at an occupied vehicle

The sheriff’s office says District Attorney Ann Garder has been contacted and the investigation is ongoing.
