Jude Bellingham fined and suspended by UEFA for gesture that violated ‘decent behaviour’

UEFA has accused Jude Bellingham of “breaching basic principles of good conduct”, but the player does not face an immediate ban.

England midfielder Bellingham was facing a suspension after UEFA launched an investigation into a gesture he made while celebrating his spectacular bicycle kick against Slovakia in the last 16 on Sunday.

After scoring, Bellingham shouted “Who else?!” as he ran towards the England fans after scoring. The Real Madrid striker was seen kissing his hand and grabbing his crotch in a gesture that appeared to be directed towards the pitch.

Amid accusations of disrespect for the Slovakia bench or its fans, Bellingham explained his actions on social media, writing on Twitter: “Inside joke aimed at a few close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how this Slovakia team played tonight.”

The matter was reported to UEFA’s ethics and disciplinary inspector, who issued a decision the day before England’s next match.

UEFA fined Bellingham €30,000 and suspended him for “a total of one UEFA competition match for which he would otherwise be available for a breach of basic principles of good conduct. Said suspension is not immediately enforceable and is subject to a probation period of one year from the date of this decision.”

Gareth Southgate will therefore have Bellingham at his disposal for the crucial quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday.

Bellingham faced a fine of up to €100,000 and a suspension of a number of matches.

The English Football Association was fined €10,000 for disturbing fans during the match against Slovakia and a further €1,000 for setting off fireworks.
