Serious crash blocks Murchison Highway, road closed near Hellyer River

Updated: Two men died at the scene of a serious crash on Tasmania’s west coast this afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted to a fatal crash on the Murchison Highway in Guildford just after 12.30pm on Friday.

Police said both men were from Launceston and were travelling in a Mazda BT50 van.

Their vehicle was reported to have collided with a Toyota Hilux driven by a woman from the north-west of the state.

She was taken to North West Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours while investigators determined the circumstances leading up to the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by the disaster,” police said.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

The road remains closed.

Before: The Murchison Highway north of Tullah has been closed following a serious crash this afternoon.

Police closed the road near the Hellyer River, about 10km south of the Waratah turnoff.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Delays should be expected.
