England’s Jude Bellingham cleared to play in Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland after being suspended for a one-match gesture in the round of 16 match against Slovakia

England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been given the green light to play in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland after being handed a one-match ban for his gesture in the round of 16 clash with Slovakia.

The Real Madrid star gestured to the Slovakia bench after scoring a bicycle kick that forced extra time.

Bellingham insisted in a social media post that the gesture was an “internal joke directed at close friends” but UEFA launched an investigation on Monday to determine whether the gesture “breached basic principles of good behaviour”.

UEFA announced on Friday that Bellingham had been fined €30,000 (£25,400) and given a suspended one-match ban. The ban will be triggered if he commits a further offence within a year, UEFA said.

The Football Association was also fined a total of €11,000 (£9,000) for crowd disturbance and the setting off of fireworks by fans during the match with Slovakia.

Merih Demiral, whose two goals helped Turkey beat Austria and book their place in the quarter-finals, has been banned for two matches for his wolf salute during a match in Leipzig on Tuesday.

The salute is believed to be linked to the far-right movement in Turkey.

UEFA said Demiral was suspended for “failing to comply with the general rules of conduct, breaking the basic rules of good behaviour, using sporting events for manifestations of an unsportsmanlike nature and bringing football into disrepute”.
