Light aircraft crash leaves pilot seriously injured

A pilot was seriously injured in a light plane crash in a Hampshire village.

The plane crashed in a field off Ryedown Lane in East Wellow on Thursday shortly after 8pm UK time.

The South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said the plane crashed into trees from a height of about 30 metres (100 feet) shortly after takeoff.

After being treated at the scene, the pilot was airlifted to University Hospital Southampton.

Firefighters from three units were called and several roads were closed.

Police said no one else was involved in the incident.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it had dispatched an investigation team to the crash site.

The spokesman said inspectors “will conduct inquiries and gather evidence as part of the safety investigation process.”
