Hertfordshire firefighters raise almost £5,000 during a 180-mile bike challenge, visiting 29 stations across the county to support a charity and an inspiring colleague

Fundraising firefighters completed a marathon bike ride, visiting all 29 fire stations in the county – also stopping in Bishop’s Stortford for a short rest.

Team 22 from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service set off on the 180-mile race at 5am on Sunday (June 30) and finished just after 9pm.

They are close to reaching their £5,000 target for the Fire Fighters’ Charity and will also support firefighter Liam Coffil, who suffered serious injuries after falling from his bike on his way to work at Garston Fire Station in August 2023.

Firefighters cycled 180 miles to take on the challenge

The Fire Fighters Charity is supporting Liam as he recovers from his injuries. For part of the ride Liam joined the cyclists on a recumbent bike with manual propulsion.

Watch Commander Dwight Williams, who helped organise the challenge, said: “Having Liam join us for part of the bike ride was very special. He is an inspiration to us all.

“While our muscles may be sore after this challenge, we are impressed by how she has managed the changes in her life since her accident.

“The Firefighters Foundation and the support they provide to people in the service is so important – they are here to help us through the mental and physical challenges we may face. Seeing their continued support for Liam and how he uses it to overcome his challenges has made this year’s ride even more important.”
