Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole Phelps are a happy family of six.

When asked in a recent interview with E! News whether or not he and Nicole would consider trying for a girl after having four boys, the 28-time Olympic medalist said he thinks “that’s it” when it comes to having more children.

“Nicole will tell you too,” he said. “I think she said she wanted a girl for me, but we have Onyx.”

Onyx is the family’s Great Dane, whom they adopted in March. “Onyx is our female, so we’ve had it all,” said Phelps, 39. “We’ve had four boys (and) now we have an awesome female.”

Phelps first posted a photo of Onyx on Instagram in March. At the time, he captioned the photo, “Our sweet baby girl… Onyx .”

Phelps recently partnered with Purina Pro Plan and starred in the docuseries Powered by, who showed how athletes use Purina Pro Plan to keep their puppies healthy and active.

Phelps told PEOPLE in a July 1 interview that Onyx “gives me the energy to be the best that I can be. And I don’t think I’ll ever lose that competitiveness.”

“She’s someone who can feel my feelings and emotions and understand when I’m having a good day or a bad day,” he continued. “It’s the simple things like her coming over and giving me love, giving me a little boost. She’s the one telling me she’s there to support me and help me. Those little things mean so much.”

“Being a father is special, just because I grew up without a dad,” Phelps said. “Being able to always be there and see every milestone has been a pleasure.”

Phelps also revealed that he is committed to his physical and emotional health, something he wants to pass on to his sons.

“Three boys, ages 8, 6 and 4, are fighting and fighting. There’s a lot of strong emotions,” he explains. “So when they’re fighting, we separate them and say, ‘Lion’s Breath.’ And then they’re able to talk about what they’re feeling in their stomach.”

The Olympian added: “As a dad, it’s really cool to see. We’re giving them a tool to be able to help them control their emotions and identify them, and I think that’s something I didn’t learn until later in life.”
