Inmate dies in Porter County Jail, police say

VALPARAISO — A male inmate was pronounced dead at the Porter County Jail Thursday evening, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers were reportedly called at approximately 8:10pm in response to the discovery of an inmate who was unconscious and not breathing.

Police said the caller informed the employee that prior to the inspection, which was allegedly due to the receipt and deposit of counterfeit banknotes at the store, the employee needed to count the amount of cash in each of the store’s cash registers.

Police said paramedics arrived at the scene and pronounced the inmate dead.

The identity of the inmate was not released Friday.

“This is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time,” police said.
