10-year-old boy injured in fireworks explosion

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A 10-year-old Oklahoma City-area boy is home from the hospital after receiving treatment for burns caused by a fireworks explosion.

The family asked to keep the boy anonymous, but his grandfather contacted KFOR Nexstar and sent photos to warn others of the danger.

KFOR spoke with the boy’s grandfather by phone. He said his grandson bought four “Barrett M107” fireworks. Of the four, two malfunctioned and one injured the boy, he said.

Eva Fair works closely with Fireworks Warehouse in Oklahoma City, where the sparklers are produced.

“Be careful,” she warned. “Sometimes things can go wrong and cause a big explosion.”

Fireworks Warehouse owner Kent Herzog recommends that fireworks be used only by adults.

“Yes, we want kids to enjoy fireworks, but we also want adults to benefit from them,” Herzog said.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that fireworks caused 10,200 injuries in 2022 alone — and that’s just counting injuries that required emergency room visits. A total of 11 deaths have been attributed to fireworks this year, the CPSC said.
