The story of how a rescued kitten helped a cat overcome loneliness has been viewed nearly 400,000 times on Instagram.

The June video shared by Chayenne Scott (@cheyennekennedyharris) begins with a slideshow of images showing her ginger and white cat named Cheeks sitting on the couch and looking out the window. “He became very clingy, cried a lot, was incredibly anxious and would stare out the window for hours,” Scott wrote. So, after much thought, she decided to adopt a kitten named Blue from an animal shelter, hoping Cheeks would accept her.

Indeed, he did, and after three days of living in different rooms, the couple met for the first time and immediately hit it off. The slideshow then cuts to video footage of Cheeks and Blue sleeping together. The text says they “became inseparable.”

So far, the video has received nearly 50,000 likes and has brought tears to many viewers.

One user posted: “You probably extended his life by five years. Not to mention the obvious improvement in his quality of life.”

A second commenter wrote: “There’s really nothing like seeing your cat and your new cat fall in love,” and another added: “My heart melts over this.”

Although felines are known for being independent, that doesn’t mean they should be left alone for long periods of time. Like humans, they need companionship, whether it’s from a person or another pet.

According to pet food company Purina, cats are social creatures that need stimulation and interaction. It is important for owners to avoid leaving their pets for long periods of time, as this can lead to them feeling lonely. Warning signs include:

  • Clinginess: If your cat is constantly seeking attention or following you around, this may indicate loneliness.
  • Aggressive behavior: Sudden aggression may signal loneliness and a need for attention.
  • Litter box problems: Cats may urinate on your belongings to show their displeasure at being left alone.
  • Excessive Grooming: Excessive grooming or pulling of hair is a sign of dissatisfaction.

Purina’s website also offers tips for owners who can’t add another member to their four-legged family. Instead, they can help their pet feel less alone by doing the following:

  • Make sure they have enough space to move around the house.
  • Offer toys like a cat tree, a brain game, or open cardboard boxes.
  • Leave the TV on for background noise.
  • Using a pheromone plug-in can help keep your cat calm.
