SPD: Suspect faces charges in 2019 sexual harassment case

FROM EMPLOYEE REPORTS

A Concord man was charged Wednesday with sexually abusing a child in Statesville in 2019.

The Statesville Police Department announced in a press release Friday afternoon the arrest of 60-year-old Steven Joseph Bork.

SPD began an investigation in December 2019 after receiving information about a possible sexual assault case involving a young victim. The initial investigation included an interview with the child at the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. However, due to the age of the child and information that was disclosed at the time, no charges were filed at that time.

In June 2024, Iredell County Department of Social Services contacted SPD with new information from the victim. The child was re-interviewed at the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center and the investigation was reopened.

Following an investigation, SPD investigators obtained arrest warrants for Borek.

SPD requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Services – Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Borek.

On Wednesday, U.S. Marshals found Borek inside an RV at a Pilot gas station in Rowan County. After a standoff, U.S. Marshals, with the assistance of Rowan County Sheriff’s Office personnel, forced entry into the RV and found Borek inside, suffering from a stab wound.

Borek was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment.

Borek has been charged with six counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and six counts of indecent liberties with a minor. He will be arrested after he is released from the hospital.

SPD expressed gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Service – North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.
