Firefighters in a Northern California town came across a tiny animal that was alone and clearly suffering without its mother.

San Mateo County firefighters had previously spotted a “tiny creature” running around near Station 17 with its mother, “but this time the mother was nowhere to be seen,” the department posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The small animal appeared disoriented and was stumbling,” the department said.

Firefighters treated the coyote to chicken and water while they waited for wildlife rehabilitators to arrive.

In the photo, you can see a small puppy lying next to two cans of chicken, one full and one empty. In another photo, you can see the little creature snuggled up to a firefighter’s jacket on his lap.

Rescuers from the Peninsula Humane Society arrived at the scene and found the puppy to be dehydrated and malnourished, officials said.

Photos show firefighters putting a small puppy in a carrier with a towel and carrying it to an animal rescue vehicle.

“We hope this little one makes a speedy recovery,” officials said.
