Parents sentenced for abusing 2-month-old baby

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo couple convicted of child abuse that left a 2-month-old baby with multiple broken bones have received sentences ranging from probation to prison time.

Paul Preston and Norene Burkhead were charged last year after the baby arrived at the hospital in Kalamazoo with injuries including a fractured skull, ribs, broken arm and leg bones.

Investigators say the injuries were asked by the boy’s father Preston. Burkhead, the child’s mother, was accused of lying to doctors about abuses.

Both appeared in Kalamazoo County District Court earlier this week to be sentenced. Preston was sentenced to 5 to 25 years in prison for first-degree child abuse.

Burkhead was placed on one year of probation for a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree child abuse. She received credit for one day served in jail.
